Finding the right antiques for a home can be a challenge. I suggest taking a trip to Europe and having your finds crated and sent back to the US. Even with the unfavourable exchange rates, buying antiques in Europe can be a lot less expensive.
You will find auctions and countryside dealers in the UK as an excellent source. You tend to get very high quality pieces for several hundred dollars as opposed to an upscale London, New York or Chicago dealer selling them for several thousand. France is also still a great source for finding a 17th century rustic country dining table or a wonderful Armoire with a lot of history. I figure go enjoy a holiday in Cornwall or the Loire Valley and spend a little time searching for auctions and pop into some of the local antique stores. If you know what you want, you can get it on holiday and ship it home for not much more than going to a posh dealer in the big city. Sometimes reproductions here in the US can cost more than the centuries old originals found in Europe. You will also find antiques that are just not available in the North American market. I’d prefer to buy an original and enjoy a trip with some fantastic countryside scenery.
Call a Chicago local moving company that specializes in international moving. They will be able to help you get an idea of what it will cost to ship back to the USA. You could also contact a “removals” company in the UK. Shipping prices will vary and it’s a good idea to get an estimate before you go shopping.
